UK WEATHER FORECASTING – ‘THE “HAND TOOLS’

5 DAY FORECAST CENTRAL SOUTHERN ENGLAND
Use for a rough idea of the week ahead

GIVES:
Wind direction & strength, cloud cover & possible rainfall plus min & max temp
http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/sw/bournemouth_forecast_weather.html

TIP: This is a very general land forecast not a sea forecast
TIP: Use for possible BBQ planning but not cross channel trips!!!

3 DAY PRESSURE CHART ANIMATION
Use to plan a few days ahead for getting afloat

GIVES: An indication of high and low pressure, fronts, wind direction & strength
http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/europe/surface_pressure.html

KEY FACT: Winds go in a clockwise direction round a high pressure system
KEY FACT: Winds go in an anticlockwise direction round a low pressure system
KEY FACT: The closer the isobars (pressure lines) the higher the winds

INSHORE WATERS FORECAST
Use before hitting the water today or tomorrow

GIVES: The best marine forecast for all UK waters up to 12 miles offshore
http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/marine/inshore_forecast.html

TIP: Shipping forecasts are usually right about type of weather but can get the timing wrong
TIP: For Central South Coast use Selsey Bill to Lyme Regis. Also look east and west.
TIP: Read the final lines “Outlook for all UK Inshore Waters for following 3 days”
TIP: Always print a copy of the Inshore Waters Forecast and take it with you!!

GLOBAL WEATHER FORECASTING 'POWER TOOLS’

MEET THE “WAVE BUOYS”

http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/Tour/virtr1.shtml
To understand how amazing this information is take the Wave Buoys guided tour

USING GLOBAL WAVE BUOYS
http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/
Go straight to the world map and select the region you are interested in
Select an individual wave buoy and find out what is happening on that bit of ocean now
TIP: Look back over the hourly record and see how conditions are changing
TIP: Always check the time zone and calculate difference with your local time

EXAMPLE: Is the surf pumping in Northern California or should I be in Hawaii?
USE: San Francisco (Station 46026) then look off island of Kauai (Station 51001)
TIP: Always check the time zone and calculate difference with your local time
TIP: Grab a last minute flight and hope the swell holds up!!

USING UK WATERS, ENGLISH CHANNEL AND ATLANTIC WAVE BUOYS
http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/
Go straight to the world map and select any sea area around the UK

EXAMPLE: For a channel crossing with a weather system approaching from the west
USE: Sevenstones (off Lands End) and Channel Lightship (approx mid central channel)
TIP: Always check the time zone and calculate difference with your local time
TIP: Look back over 24 hours and consider rising winds and falling pressure

USING SCRIPPS 5 DAY WAVE HEIGHT FORECAST
http://facs.scripps.edu/surf/images/euranim.gif
USE: For surf forecasts and for passage planning
The top of the chart shows the time moving on from a recent fixed time
The colours clearly show projected wave heights at each new time
The arrows clearly show projected swell directions at each new time

USING THE INFO FOR COMMERCIAL SHIPPING & OFFSHORE OPERATIONS
http://www.oceanweather.com
USE: For the forecasting of ocean winds and waves by ocean-going vessels

UK TIDE TABLES

IF YOU ARE GOING ON THE WATER IN THE NEXT 7 DAYS
Check out our favourite site for quick tidal information
The BBC kindly runs it using world class UKHO (UK Hydrographic Office) data
Thanks boys you can definitely have my licence fee!!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/coast/tides/index.shtml

If you have not been to this tide site before read some of the background and FAQs
TIP: Spring Tide = Higher high tides & lower low tides. Neaps = less range from high to low
TIP: Tide tables are an ESTIMATE. Use them as a guide to the depth not a guarantee
TIP: A 3 foot swell has little effect at sea but it will affect a shallow entrance & props!!

TIDE EXAMPLE - you are going to launch from Christchurch tomorrow

STAGE 1: Click on ‘SOUTH’. Scroll down to ‘CHRISTCHURCH’ (Entrance or Quay)
STAGE 2: Click on the right date. Look at the graph for an ESTIMATE of depth
STAGE 3: Highlight the graph and tide times. Then print.

TIP: Note whether times are GMT (winter) or BST (summer) and change the hour!!
TIP: Print it on the back of the Inshore Forecast for that day. Then take it with you!!

I hate to be boring about this time zone thing but ‘If In Doubt Check It Out’

http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/custom.html?sort=1&low=c

TIP: Greenwich Mean Time = GMT = international time = the basis of the world time clock.
TIP: GMT Marks precision time and military time (sometimes called Zulu Time).
COMMENT: BST Seems to be there to keep a few farmers happy & confuse the rest of us!!
