Surfs Up’ on the South Coast
Wherever there is a wave you will find surfers. Since the 1960’s surfers have been catching the best waves on the south coast at Bournemouth and Boscombe Pier, Southbourne and Highcliffe Beach.
The best waves for surfing are driven by low pressure systems in the North Atlantic, these push swells up the English Channel onto the South Coast. Wind blown waves can be created within a few hours in this area by fresh south westerly, southerly or south easterly winds.
Besides the cutting edge performance of short surfboards known as “Thrusters” surfing offers many ways to catch waves. From simply swimming and bodysurfing in the waves to riding long Malibu surfboards.
When choosing a surfboard your choice of board should be based on your height, weight and previous experience. A general guide to first time surfboards is not too narrow, not too thin and at least 30 centimetres over your own height.
Wetsuits for warmth
On a warm summers day you can stay in the water for an hour or more just wearing a pair of shorts or a swimming costume. But if the surfs up you will want to stay in longer, this is when its time to think about wetsuits. The big names in wetsuits are Gul and Alder from the UK, Rip Curl from Australia and O’Neill from America.
Wherever there is a wave you will find surfers and bodyboarders. The beaches at Southbourne, Boscombe, Bournemouth and Highcliffe offer ideal conditions.
