Beginners need a surfboard that is at least 1’ taller than them.  To learn to ‘stand up’ you need good ‘clean’ surf conditions, no bathers in the water to ride into and a lot of determination!!

Skimboards are perfect for catching a ride at the water’s edge even on a flat day. The original skimboards were round and only went in shallow water when the tide was out, but the modern skimboard is usually made of marine ply and looks more like a squashed surfboard.

Just throw it down in the shallow water, leap on and ride along the water’s edge or charge at the incoming surf. This is a great way to get fit at the beach – even for non-swimmers!
